Attorney

Betty became interested in special education law while conducting due process hearings for the Oregon Department of Education as an administrative law judge.  She deepened her knowledge through adjudicating special education issues, attending continuing legal education programs, and personal experience.

A lifelong student, Betty has Master’s degrees in English and Library Science as well as a J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law, and recently earned a certificate to teach English as a Second Language.  Currently she enjoys auditing classes at Portland State University in various subjects including history, Spanish and linguistics, and volunteers as an ESL tutor at Portland Community College.

Before becoming an ALJ Betty worked for the Oregon Department of Justice as an Assistant Attorney General, writing legal opinions and representing the Civil Rights Division of the Bureau of Labor and Industries.  After leaving her ALJ position Betty was delighted when Diane invited her to apply for the job of her dreams: no homework or fixed hours, compelling subject matter, and wonderful colleagues.  She is even more delighted to have that job.  Other pleasures include reading, hiking, traveling and playing the piano.
